Thai police have arrested six Nigerians in connection with an international cocaine trafficking syndicate and an artificial intelligence-powered romance scam. The scam reportedly targeted elderly women, according to authorities.
The arrests occurred during coordinated raids on three apartments in a luxury condominium near Phra Nang Klao Bridge in Nonthaburi Province. Officers from the Thai Metropolitan Police Bureau faced resistance as occupants allegedly refused entry and attempted to destroy evidence before police forced their way into the residences.
Investigators recovered 18 mobile phones, three laptop computers, and three bank passbooks during the operation. Police stated that some seized phones contained active conversations related to suspected drug transactions. The investigation began in April following the arrest of a suspected kingpin, identified as Patrick, and four accomplices. Assets valued at approximately 2.5 million baht, or N103 million, were recovered in that initial operation. Subsequent financial investigations allegedly linked the six Nigerian suspects to the broader network.
Police allege the suspects entered Thailand on student visas but resided in expensive riverside apartments without attending school or engaging in legitimate employment. Investigators also claim to have uncovered evidence of an online romance scam where artificial intelligence generated images of attractive foreign men. These images depicted individuals posing as wealthy pilots, doctors, and United States military personnel.
The fake identities were used to establish online relationships, primarily with elderly Thai women. Victims were then convinced that expensive gifts had been shipped from overseas but were being withheld by customs officials. Subsequently, victims were allegedly persuaded to send money to facilitate the release of these purported parcels.
Authorities also recovered scripts allegedly used by the suspects to manipulate victims emotionally. These scripts included conversations designed to exploit loneliness and gain trust. The six suspects, aged 23 to 35, initially admitted to belonging to a criminal association and overstaying their visas, according to Thai police. Investigators indicated that additional charges related to fraud and online romance scams could be filed as investigations continue.
The ongoing investigation seeks to determine the full extent of the syndicate’s operations and identify any further accomplices. Authorities are also examining the financial trails to trace the proceeds of both the alleged drug trafficking and the romance scams. The use of AI in these schemes presents a growing challenge for law enforcement.
