Paul Feig Reflects on Ghostbusters Backlash

Director Paul Feig continues to face online criticism a decade after the release of his female-led 2016 Ghostbusters film. Feig, 63, received the Visionary Storyteller Tribute at the 2026 Nantucket Film Festival, where he addressed the persistent negative reactions during a conversation on Friday, June 19. He described the experience as a “lightning rod” that still makes it difficult for him to engage with the internet.

Feig, known for films such as Bridesmaids, initially hesitated to reboot the popular franchise, which originated in 1984, calling it “sacred ground for comedy.” He believed a new version starring funny women would distinguish it from the original and preserve its legacy. This approach, he thought, was “the greatest idea ever.”

The director recalled the intense online response, referring to it sarcastically as “a good time” during the festival discussion. He noted that a segment of fans continues to send angry messages. This sustained negative feedback has caused him significant professional difficulties, even though he remains proud of the movie.

Feig attributed some of the film’s negative reception to its release during the 2016 U.S. presidential election, a period of heightened political tension. He stated, “It was just the worst time to put it out.” The film, he explained, “somehow unnecessarily became a political statement to go see that movie,” despite most audiences simply wanting to enjoy a comedy.

The 2016 Ghostbusters movie starred Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, and Chris Hemsworth. Since its release, two other Ghostbusters sequels, Afterlife (2021) and Frozen Empire (2024), have been released, both led by Paul Rudd. These subsequent films represent separate continuations of the franchise.

Feig maintains his pride in the film and stated, “I don’t regret it.” However, he admitted that the project “definitely caused me more trouble than I needed in my career.” His remarks at the festival underscored the long-term impact of the online response on his professional life.

The ongoing discussion around the 2016 Ghostbusters film highlights the challenges filmmakers face when reinterpreting beloved franchises. The intensity of fan reactions, particularly online, can have lasting effects on creators and their work. Future reboots of established properties may continue to encounter similar scrutiny.

It remains to be seen how the legacy of the 2016 film will evolve over time, especially as new installments in the Ghostbusters universe are released. The conversation at the Nantucket Film Festival provides insight into the personal and professional toll such public reactions can take on artists.
